LONG DUSTER COAT

Do you know the 'history' behind the duster coat? I didn't but Google helped.

Originally, dusters were worn by cowboys in the 19th century in the American West, to protect their clothing from trail dust. At the turn of the twentieth century, both men and women wore dusters to protect their clothes when riding in open automobiles.

I did wonder why anyone would call something so beautiful a duster coat - but yes, to protect one's prettier clothes from dust makes sense, eh?

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 500 gms of Stallion 8-ply acrylic yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; fabric glue to seal ends ; embroidery needle.

I bought this yarn in Australia from Spotlight stores. This yarn is not specific for this project.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

For Indians : The yarn I used is the same thickness of our Oswal or Vardhaman Millennium acrylic yarns.

You could use Anchor , Red ros e ; Red rose metallic or unbranded knitting cotton as well

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

lp(s) : Loop(s) sc : Single crochet

dc : Double crochet sp : Space

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.

Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.

In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement. This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

First calculations :

1. Keep your round bust / round chest / round waist measurements.

Use the largest measure.

2. You need to decide the length for your duster coat.

3. Decide the length for your sleeves

4. Check gauge

What did I do differently?

My yarn was not the one suggested by the designer - and the hook I used worked for my yarn not for the pattern (i.e. gauge did not work) BUT it was the yarn chosen by my client.

So I did work the gauge and saw how many stitches were needed to get MY gauge, and then I worked one size up to get the size I needed.

The first thing you need to work is the pocket - and the designer has given you the size you need for this (or rather the finished size for the pocket) - so I just worked the pattern till I got that size and then decided that one size larger would work for me.

Of course, I also kept in mind the measurements of my client and kept measuring to see that I had that right too.

Yes, this is probably not the easiest way to work a pattern, but it gets the job done. Hopefully it does for you too.

I also chose to work a dc instead of hdc row after a row of "cross stitches".

How to work the fpdc : yo, hk into sp between posts of st from row below – going from back of stitch, around st and into the front of the st ; yo, pull yarn through the sps (3 lps on hk), (yo & pull through 2 lps) twice. One fpdc complete
