EXQUISITE FLORAL HAIR COMB 4
The beautiful Iris Lily hair comb

Yes, once I get started with one project, I seem to just get lost in that for a bit.. so here’s my next hair comb.  Do check out my first two blogs on the similar project.
This is not my pattern.  I’ve used a photo tutorial that I found on the internet at http://www.casadasalete.com.br/2012/12/copo-de-leite-em-croche.html and here’s the photo that inspired me.

These are my notes as I work on my own project.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest.

All my blogs can be printed.  Find the printer friendly (green) link at the bottom of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.

Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation.

Just copy the link on the search bar above - that's the blog URL.

This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used a combination of the lovely Indian Anchor knitting cotton (Size 20) with a 1.3 mm crochet hook
You also need a tic-tac hair clip or a hair barrette ; headband or rubber band ; or tic-tac clip ; fabric glue ; embroidery needle to attach your little motif.

For Indians : You could use Red rose ; Red Rose metallic cotton or unbranded   knitting cotton as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

This project is made up of two parts.  For the first part, the petal, we will make a round-ish doily-like petal.  We will then work on the inner stamen and finally put the two piece together to get this awesome lily flower.

As before, I am going to give you ideas, and you can throw in picots and beads as you please to jazz up your own creation.

As mentioned before, this is not my creation, so do feel free to visit the photo tutorial on the link above.

Part 1 : Petal

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

Start with a magic circle and 8 hdc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Pull lightly to close circle.

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Round 1 : 2 dc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc.

Round 2 : 2 dc in the 1st dc  ; 2 dc in the next 4 dc ;
(ch 1, dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) 10 times ;
2 dc in the next 6 dc ; dc in the last 2 dc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc.

Round 3 : dc in the 1st 10 dc  ;
(ch 2, dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) 10 times ;
dc in the last 14 dc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc.

Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times.  One trc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/A0y4BbgDTbs

Round 4 : dc in the 1st 10 dc  ;
(2 dc in the next ch-2 sp ; dc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) 4 times ;
3 trc in the next ch-2 sp ; dc in the next dc ;
rep (to) 5 times ;
dc in the last 14 dc.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc.

In our last round, we will use a ch-3 picot, which is (ch 3, sl-st in the 3rd ch from hk).  Just so you know where we’re going to use this picot, you can go ahead and mark the centre trc that you have made in the last round.

How to work a picot stitch : Traditionally for a ch-3 picot, you work (ch 3, sl-st in 3rd ch from hook).  For a ch-5 picot, you will do (ch 5, sl-st in 5th ch from hook).
Here’s a great video https://youtu.be/8s3zVaBcn4s

Round 5 : dc in the 1st 23 dc ;
trc in the next 2 dc ; 2 trc in the next trc ;
(trc + picot + trc) all in the next trc ;
2 trc in the next trc ; trc in the next 2 dc ;
dc in each dc till end.  Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc.

Great job!  We have created the petal for our beautiful lily flower.

Part 2 : Inner Stamen
Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Start with a magic circle and 8 hdc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Pull lightly to close circle.

Rounds 1 - 11 : hdc in the 1st hdc and in each hdc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc (Read Notes below)

Half double crochet 2-tog : hdc 2-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp] (3 lps on hk) ; insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp (4 lps on hk) ; yo, draw through all 4 lps on hk.  One hdc 2-tog made.
Check the video tutorial at https://youtu.be/jdaXTr7Lcig

Round 12 : hdc 2-tog over the 1st 2 hdc ;
(hdc 2-tog over the next 2 hdc) ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st dc.

Fasten off and cut yarn leaving a tail to stitch onto the petal.
Before stitching, pass the yarn through the last 4 sts and close the small hole.
Now attach the stamen to the petal made.

Notes :
1.       You will work as many rounds as needed for the stamen to be of a length that will just about stick out of the top, but is not longer than the white petal we’ve made. (Look at the photo for reference on length)
2.     There is no precise length needed for the stem.  Fold the white petal over, and see how much of the stamen you want peeping through, and stop accordingly.
3.     You may decide to use sc instead of hdc, and that will not affect the pattern.  It may, however, affect how many rounds you’ll need to get the length needed.

Fasten off and leave a long tail to attach your flower motif to the barette or dress of choice.

Part 3 : Stem

Start (using green yarn) with a magic circle and 6 sc in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.
Pull lightly to close circle.

Rounds 1 - 6 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc.

You may continue as many rounds as you want depending on how long you want your stem.
If you are OK with the length you have thus far, carry on with Round 7, else increase stem length and then come back to instructions below.

Round 7 : 2 sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc

Round 8 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc

Round 9 : 2 sc in the 1st sc  ;
(sc in the next sc ; 2 sc in the next sc) ;
rep (to) all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st sc

Round 10 : sc in the 1st sc and in each sc all around.

Finishing : Neatly attach all your pieces together.
Fold the two parts of the petal around and over the stamen, and sew the stamen at the base.
Then attach on the small green stem to the flower petal.
Finally join the little flower neatly to the top of the hair comb / barrette, and glue in all ends.
