EXQUISITE FLORAL HAIR COMB 1
The simple flower hair comb

Recently I seem to be seeing a lot of hair stuff on the net, and I have always loved hair combs.  The thought of a little flower decorating the comb and peeping through hair is fascinatingly fascinating.
Welcome back as we work on this new challenge together.

Materials used : Today I’ve used the lovely Indian Red Rose metallic cotton yarn with a 1.3 mm crochet hook
You also need a tic-tac hair clip or a hair barrette ; headband or rubber band ; or tic-tac clip ; fabric glue ; embroidery needle to attach your little motif.

In general : Use any yarn with a suitable hook to make these projects. The finer the yarn, the tinier the project.
For Indians : You can use Anchor , Red ros or unbranded knitting cotton or  as well

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used , I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.  For your convenience there video tutorials through the blog too
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

For this project we will make a series of small flowers and then add then all up together to make our lovely little hair comb creation.

I am going to give you ideas, and you can throw in picots and beads as you please to jazz up your own creation.

This is a really cute simple flower motif, so you’re going to have a lot of fun blinging it up.  Hooks on.. let’s go.

I’ve made two types of flowers here, so let’s start with the 1st one.

Magic circle : To refresh your skill, please view this easy video https://youtu.be/ISC39yOqWro

What is a slip stitch : Here is a neat video tutorial at https://youtu.be/weB3QNbA8Iw

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Start Round 1 : with a magic circle :
(sc + ch 1) 5 times in that circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.  (5 sc ; 5 ch-1 sps)

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Round 2 : sl-st into the 1st ch-1 sp ;
(ch 3 ; 2 dc in the next sc ;
ch 3, sl-st in the same ch-1 sp) ;
*sk next sc, rep (to) in the next ch-1 sp ;
rep *to* all around.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

In our last round, we will give a slight shape to the tops of our petals.
To join our final round, we are going to use all the skipped sc of Round 1.

Half Double Crochet : Hdc :  yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk) ;
yo, draw through all 3 lps.  One hdc made.
Check out the video at https://youtu.be/sDiELJdB2Dg

Chainless start for Half Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 start, and this is what I do to start my row of hdc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/lWXpl1KdbZ8

Round 3 : [hdc in the sc (of Round 1) ;
ch 4, sk the next ch-3 sp, sc in the space between the 2 dc ;
ch 4, sk next ch-3 sp, sc in the sc of Round 1] ;
rep [to] all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Fasten off and leave a long tail to attach your flower motif to the barrette or dress of choice.

For the 2nd type of flower, or to add a 2nd layer of petals, you will need to work from under the petals just made to create a 2nd layer.

You will first work Rounds 1 – 3 for the 1st layer of petals, and then continue Rounds 4 & 5 here.

The beauty of this pattern is that the first part of the flower pops out at you, as we will be working with post stitches.
This is what makes it an Intermediate Skill level project.

So while we will use the same pattern for the 2nd set of petals, we will first need to get under this first set of petals.  So there are two ways to do that.

Round 4 : Turn the flower around (for convenience) and work a sl-st in the 1st hdc,   (ch 3, sl-st in the next hdc) ;
rep (to) all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

You will work all of this with the wrong side or under side of the flower facing you.

OR you work with post stitches as follows.

We will work a fpdc around the hdc sts that mark the end of each petal.

Front Post Double Crochet : fpdc : Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below.
How to work the fpdc :  yo, hk into sp between posts of st from row below – going from back of stitch, around st and into the front of the st ; yo, pull yarn through the sps (3 lps on hk), (yo & pull through 2 lps) twice.  One fpdc complete

Round 4 : fpdc around the 1st hdc ;
(and working from under the first layer of petals),
*ch 3, fpdc around the next hdc* ;
rep *to* all around
and join with a sl-s to the 1st st.

No matter which Round 4 you have chosen, all that’s important is that you have those ch-3 sps in place.  Each ch-3 sp will now be your next petal.

Round 5 : sl-st into the 1st ch-3 sp ,
*(ch 3, 3 dc, ch 3, sl-st in the same ch-3 sp) ;
sl-st in the next ch-3 sp* ;
rep *to* all around
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

And here you have a lovely five-petaled double layered flower.

If you wish to add beads, you will either need to add it in the 1st circle, or add it in with your embroidery needle at the end.

How to add beads : Check this video at https://youtu.be/EcpgMgBox8I

How will you make this a 6 petaled flower?
Start with (sc + ch 1) 6 times in that 1st magic circle, and work all the instructions as given.

If you wish to make this a larger flower, all you will need to do is increase the number of start stitches.. and if you want it a larger size, then you will need to increase the thickness of yarn and hook.

Note : As I suggested earlier, you can throw in a bead right in the centre of that first magic circle and watch your lovely little flower twinkle as the wearer moves her head!

Do remember though that this is where you read all about this project.  So please add my blog link when you share and show off your project.  Thanks in advance.
