Come along and let’s create something beautiful with a simple granny square today.

Materials usedI have used an Indian 1mm polyester yarn , with a 2.5 mm crochet hook
In general : The yarn I have used is available only in India, but you do not need just this yarn to make this project.
The lighter the yarn - the better the belly dance belt.
That said, you can use this pattern to make a blanket as well, in which case you just use blanket suitable yarn and hook.

For Indians : You could use Anchor , Red ros ; Red rose metallic or unbranded  knitting cotton as well as Oswal or Vardhaman acrylic yarns
General yarn info : Use any yarn with a suitable hook

International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.

Skill levelIntermediate to advanced.
The motif pattern is easy – intermediate. The joining of and making into a belly belt is a little more complicated, and needs advanced crochet skills.

Instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
For our boho/ belly dance belt, we will first make several granny squares / motifs and then attach them.  Add in beads and bling as desired when making the square, by the way.  I will not be telling you where to add the beads – that’s your creativity.
I request you to check the links at the top of this blog on how to add beads onto your yarn and work.

Once we make our motifs and attach them, we will work on the top of belt and bottom bling.
Here's how to join as you go.  In case this video does not come on, go to https://youtu.be/zN3ECWTYXBk

For the beautiful multi coloured motif pattern, visit https://www.abc-knitting-patterns.com/1267.html

Once I had finished the second motif, I attached it as a diamond, rather than square, to the first motif.  You could attach it as a square too..and if you so decide, then you will follow the attachment as given.

If you decide on the diamond presentation, all you do is spin your square such that it is a diamond, and then use the same attachment idea/instructions given but attach the ch-5 sp of the 2nd motif to the ch-5 sp of the 1st motif keeping Motif 1 diamond-wise.  Easy enough, right?

Once you have attached the diamond motifs together, you have the “V” on top and bottom that needs to be filled.  So first I decided to join the tops of the motifs together.

Top Strap idea :

I worked ch 50 to join the tops together.  You may not need the same number of chain. May I suggest that you work a few chain and place your diamonds flat – then see how many you need to keep them just right wide apart.
It will be good if you kept the chain count in multiples of 4 or 5 ; which is a good enough spacing for the pattern that will come in the Top “V” portion of our belt.

Top “V” beads fill up idea :

free crochet pattern, free crochet belt pattern, free crochet beaded belt pattern, free crochet boho belt pattern, free crochet bohemian belt pattern, free crochet belly belt pattern, Pradhan stores,

For the top “V” bit, I worked the pattern in a bit of a complicated way – so while I will tell my way, I will also suggest an easier way that came to me as I was nearly done with all my fill – ins.

For our fill-in, we will start with the last stitch on the right hand side of your belt.  So attach your yarn at that sc (which is also the top of the last diamond on the right hand side)
For this section, we will work one “V” at a time.  So in my case, I worked this pattern four times to fill in the four “V”s.

For the 1st row, we will be working off the chain we have just made.
I am assuming that you have worked in multiples of 5.
In case you have worked in multiples of 4, you will sk 3 st / ch, and work in the next st / ch.

Row 1 :  sc in the 1st sc ;
*(ch 3 + bead + ch 3), sk next 4 st / ch, sc in the next st / ch* ;
rep *to* till end.  Turn.

This is where it got tricky.  So I put my diamond down, and placed 6 markers each along the sides of the two adjacent diamonds (that we are working on).  This means I marked 6 points along the left diamond, and 6 points along the right diamond.  Got it? These are the points that I used to work my beaded pattern.

a)   Now with each row, I reduced beads and ch-sps.
b)   The centre of each ch-sp is the bead you have worked.  So you need to work / join the next row neatly under this bead.

Row 2 :  sl-st down to the 1st marker , sc in the same 1st marker ;
ch 1, sc into the bottom of the bead from Row 1 ;
*(ch 3 + bead + ch 3), sc in the bottom of the next bead from Row 1* ;
rep *to* till 2nd last bead ;
ch 3, sc into the bottom of the last bead from Row 1 ;
ch 1, sc into the 1st marker on the opposite side diamond.  Turn.

Row 3 - 5 :  Rep Row 2

Row 6 :  sl-st down to the last marker , sc in the same marker ;
ch 1, sc into the bottom of the bead from Row 5 ;
*(ch 3 + bead + ch 3), sc in the bottom of the next bead from Row 1* ;
ch 1, sc into the bottom st of the “V” from motif ;
rep *to* once ;
ch 1, sc into the 1st marker on the opposite side diamond.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

The simpler option I felt was making this little “V” pattern first, and then attaching it to the top and sides of the motifs.  Turning and attaching each row via markers was tricky.  But you see what works for you.

Bottom “V” beads fill up idea :

free crochet pattern, free crochet belt pattern, free crochet beaded belt pattern, free crochet boho belt pattern, free crochet bohemian belt pattern, free crochet belly belt pattern, Pradhan stores,

For the bottom “V” bit, I worked one edging of beads – adding one bead like above (ch 3 + bead + ch 3).  For the hanging tassels bit, I just made a similar (to) pattern, but working downwards.
It is a wee bit complicated to start, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll have a lot of fun hearing the tinkling of the tiny beads and metal pieces as you build the belt up.

And that’s it..your oh! so exciting boho / belly dance belt is ready to be used…. and we’re ready to show off this lovely creation too.
