AN EASY HEAD KERCHIEF

This easy head kerchief has been made specially for our warriors who have fought through one of the hardest diseases that's hitting us these days.  These cancer warriors need a little love at this time when things seem most bleak.  I have made this light lacy kerchief using locally available soft cotton yarn.

This is a really simple pattern, using just double crochet stitches all through and there are video tutorials for all stitches used for this creation.  The beauty of this pattern is that not only can you use any yarn to work it, you can make it to any size as well. Thanks for joining me.  Come along, let’s create something beautiful

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.

How labels work : All patterns under a similar label can be found together so when you click on the label for say "crochet baby dress pattern", all my baby dress patterns are available - so scroll down to the very bottom and click on "Older Posts" to move onto the next post in the series. Before you reach that you have several other ways to find my blogs including blog links at the bottom of this blog
For your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram
Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest and if you are looking for more bags then come here
All my blogs can be printed.  Find the print friendly (green) link on the right of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation. Just copy the link on the search bar on the top of your screen - that's the blog URL. To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.  This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used some unbranded (Indian) cotton 4-ply yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers
For Indians The yarn I’ve used is something like our Ganga Alisha acrylic yarn - or slightly thicker (say 1.5 times) to our Vardhaman Oswal  acrylic yarns  or Laura knitting cotton .
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn

Difficulty level : Easy

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

The beauty of today's pattern is that you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to create this project.  You can also use any stitch (sc or hdc or e-sc ; or any of the extended stitches - videos for all of which are given above). I've worked my scarf in dc, so that's how I'm writing out my pattern.
The other beauty is that there is no end size for this - you can make it to any size and then add tassels as long as you want to make it dainty and 'long'er..

There are also innumerable patterns for this creation available on the net as it really is one of the simplest scarf patterns to crochet.  These are my notes as I work on my own original head kerchief

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0
Start Row 1: with a magic circle and work (dc ; ch 1, 3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc ; ch 1, dc) in it.  Pull lightly to close but do not join.  Turn
You can mark the centre ch-1 sp for convenience with a marker.
From now on we will work 3 dc in all the ch-1 sps and skip the 3-dc sets. We will also work (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) in the centre marked ch-1 sp all through.
Start Row 1 in detail
Row 2 :  dc in the 1st dc ;
3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) in the centre marked ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Row 2 detail
Row 3 :  dc in the 1st dc ;
3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
3 dc in the next ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) in the centre marked ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, 3 dc in the next two ch-1 sps ;
ch 1, dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Row 3 till centre ch-1 spRow 3 complete

I have decided to change colors and brighten up the olive green yarn.  But this is not necessary for the pattern.  You can continue with a single color of yarn for the full pattern as well.

How to change colors seamlessly : https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : https://youtu.be/NuascBU3pxQ
Row 4 :  dc in the 1st dc ;
3 dc in the 1st ch-1 sp ;
[3 dc in the next ch-1 sp] ;
rep {to} till the centre marked centre marked ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) in the centre marked ch-1 sp ;
ch 1, 3 dc in the next two ch-1 sps ;
ch 1, dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Row 4 till centre ch-1 sp using a contrast color yarnRow 4 complete - contrast yarn shows off the pattern
For your own creativity decide if you are changing yarn colors and how often you are doing it.  As mentioned before, the change of colors does not affect the pattern at all.

I'm sure you've got the pattern by now.  Rep Row 4 till you have the length you want for your head kerchief.  Measure your length from the start row along the centre spine and ensure that the sides reach till the ears.  Cool eh?  Of course if you are using a multi-colored / self striping yarn, this gives it a stunning look.
and the basic pattern all done
We will work a border as well as straps to finish our head kerchief.

Finishing ideas :
You can end in pattern (as I have) or you can work a row of sc along the edge.
You can also decide to work a row of sc all along the "V" edge of the scarf too.
You can work a row of reverse single crochet or Crab stitch along the edges as well
Crab Stitch or Reverse Single Crochet stitch : https://youtu.be/cG3crwyHPnk

I have decided to work a small border pattern and if you decide to work this follow on.
When you finish the length of the scarf, start on the border immediately

Border pattern :
Row 1 : 3 dc in the 1st dc ;
sk next ch-1 sp and dc, sc in the next dc ;
(sk next dc, 3 dc in the next ch-1 sp ;
sk next dc, sc in the next dc) ;
rep (to) till the centre ;
5 dc in the centre ch-1 sp ;
sk next dc, sc in the next dc ;
rep (to) till the last dc ;
3 dc in the last dc.  Turn

3 dc in the last dc.  Turn.

zoomed in detail for centre of border Row 2
As we work the last row we will work on the straps or ties at the same time.
So while we need to work 3 dc in the 1st dc, we will work just 1 dc and then work a chain length of 50 ch for the tie.  We will then work an sc in each ch all the way back to the 1st dc and then continue with the pattern.
1st dc for Border row 3, then work ch for strap or tiethe chain length for the tie all done

Last Row 3 : 1 dc in the 1st dc ;
{work a ch length of 50 ch.  Turn and work sc in each ch till the 1st dc.
Work 1 dc + picot and 1 more dc in the 1st dc of Row 2} ;
sc in the next dc ;
sk next dc ;
*(dc ; dc + picot ; dc) all in the next sc ;
sk next dc, sc in the next dc*;
rep *to* till centre 3-dc set ;
<< sc in the next dc or the 1st dc of the centre 3-dc set ;
[3 dc + picot + 2 dc] all in the next dc of the centre 3-dc set ;
sc in the next dc of the centre 3-dc set >> ;
rep *to* till the last sc ;
sk next dc, sc in the next dc ;
dc ; dc + picot ; dc) all in the last dc ;
Work 50 ch .  Turn and work sc in each ch till the last dc ;
work 2 sc in each horizontal bar of dc till the other end or the other strap.
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Now using the exact same pattern you can make a lovely triangular scarf too.  All you need to do is work as many rows as needed for the length and width of your scarf and then just to add to the length and laciness of the pattern, you can add a few tassels to the end.
