An easy head kerchief 2

An easy head kerchief 2 - free crochet pattern info from Sweet Nothings Crocheta beautiful and simple head kerchief modelled on a head mannquin

This is my 2nd easy head kerchief that has been made specially for our warriors who have fought through one of the hardest diseases that's hitting us these days.  These cancer warriors need a little love at this time when things seem most bleak.  I have made this light lacy kerchief using locally available soft cotton yarn.

This is a really simple pattern, using just double crochet stitches all through and there are video tutorials for all stitches used for this creation.  The beauty of this pattern is that not only can you use any yarn to work it, you can make it to any size as well. Thanks for joining me.  Come along, let’s create something beautiful

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.

How labels work : All patterns under a similar label can be found together so when you click on the label for say "crochet baby dress pattern", all my baby dress patterns are available - so scroll down to the very bottom and click on "Older Posts" to move onto the next post in the series. Before you reach that you have several other ways to find my blogs including blog links at the bottom of this blog
For your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram
Oh, and may I add that the fastest way to find any of my blogs is via Pinterest and if you are looking for more bags then come here
All my blogs can be printed.  Find the print friendly (green) link on the right of this blog.  You can also hit Control P (or Command P for Mac) on your keyboard, and the blog will go directly to the connected printer.
Remember that you only print if absolutely essential.  Save paper – Save Our Earth.

Do remember to add my blog URL when you make and show off your creation. Just copy the link on the search bar on the top of your screen - that's the blog URL. To purchase this or similar yarn online, click here to buy your yarns online via Amazon.  While you will still pay the same, I may get paid by Amazon as well.  This is a free blog - so do pay it forward for me.  Cheers.

Materials used : Today I’ve used some unbranded (Indian) cotton 4-ply yarn with a 3.5 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers
For Indians The yarn I’ve used is something like our Ganga Alisha acrylic yarn - or slightly thicker (say 1.5 times) to our Vardhaman Oswal  acrylic yarns  or Laura knitting cotton .
You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well
General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
International yarns :  Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.
but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn

Instructions using U.S terminology
Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.
Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

The beauty of today's pattern is that you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to create this project.  You can also use any stitch (sc or hdc or e-sc ; or any of the extended stitches - videos for all of which are given above). I've worked my scarf in dc, so that's how I'm writing out my pattern.
The other beauty is that there is no end size for this - you can make it to any size and then add tassels as long as you want to make it dainty and 'long'er..

There are also innumerable patterns for this creation available on the net as it really is one of the simplest scarf patterns to crochet.  These are my notes as I work on my own original head kerchief
chart for the pattern

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0
Start Row 1: with a magic circle and work 4 dc in it.  Pull lightly to close but do not join.  Turn
Row 1 detail
Row 2 :  4 dc in the 1st dc ;
sk 2 dc, 4 dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Row 2 detail
In the following row onwards, we will be working in the 'space between stitches'.  Usually we work a. ch-1 sp but we do not have that here but we do have that space between sets of stitches and that's where we're working. The photo tutorial will make this clearer
Row 3 :  4 dc in the 1st dc ;
sk 3 dc, 3 dc in the sp between the next set of sts ;
sk 3 dc ; 4 dc in the last dc.  Turn.
this is the space between 2 sets of stsRow 3 : 3 dc in the space between 2 sets of sts

Row 2 complete
I have decided to change colors but this is not necessary for the pattern.  You can continue with a single color of yarn for the full pattern as well.

How to change colors seamlessly : https://youtu.be/fRzSBja9jno

How to carry your yarn when using two colors : https://youtu.be/NuascBU3pxQ
Row 4 :  4 dc in the 1st dc ;
(sk 3 dc, 3 dc in the sp between the next set of sts) ;
rep (t) till the last 4-dc set
sk 3 dc ; 4 dc in the last dc.  Turn.
sk 3 dc ; 4 dc in the last dc.  Turn.
Row 4 with alternate color yarnRow 4 complete
you can see where the 'space' is better with the different colored yarn

Row 5 with alternate colored yarn Row 6 with main color
Rows 5 and 6 complete just so you can see the space clearly

For your own creativity decide if you are changing yarn colors and how often you are doing it.  As mentioned before, the change of colors does not affect the pattern at all.

I'm sure you've got the pattern by now.  Rep Row 4 till you have the length you want for your head kerchief.  Measure your length from the start row along the centre spine and ensure that the sides reach till the ears.  Cool eh?  Of course if you are using a multi-colored / self striping yarn, this gives it a stunning look.

We will work a border as well as straps to finish our head kerchief.

Finishing ideas :
You can end in pattern (as I have) or you can work a row of sc along the edge.
You can also decide to work a row of sc all along the "V" edge of the scarf too.
You can work a row of reverse single crochet or Crab stitch along the edges as well
Crab Stitch or Reverse Single Crochet stitch : https://youtu.be/cG3crwyHPnk

I have decided to work a small border pattern and if you decide to work this follow on.
When you finish the length of the scarf, start on the border immediately.
Now we're working the border pattern only along the two sides of the scarf triangle.  There is the long section (that we've been working up and down on)  ; the other two sections that form the sides of the triangle will go along the back of the head.  Correct? But the two sides do not have stitches - they have the horizontal bars of the dc.  So before we start our border we need to work a row of sc all the way down these sides.  Remember we work 2 dc along each horizontal bar of the dc till we reach the centre.
We need to work in multiples of 3 + 1 for each side of the kerchief.  This means that its (3 + 1) for one side till the centre and then you have (3 + 1) again for the other side.

Border pattern :
Row 1 : Turn and work sc along the horizontal bars of the dc (2 sc per dc) in multiples of 3 + 1 till you reach the centre. Turn.
sc down the sides of the head kerchief
We will now start on the border pattern

Row 2 : (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) in the 1st sc ;
*sk next sc ; (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) all in the next sc) ;
rep *to* till you reach the other end of the triangle ;
Turn and we'll work along the front edge of our kerchief ;
in the 1st c ;
sk next sc ; (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) in the 1st dc ;
sk next 2 dc , sc in the space between the 2 sets of sts ;
[sk next dc , (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) in the next dc ;
sk next dc, sc in the space between the next set of sts] ;
rep [to] till end and join with a sl-st to the 1st st
Do not turn.  We will continue our pattern along the front of work
the border pattern Row 2 down the sides of the triangle work the pattern till the centre and then continue down the other side of the triangle
Work the pattern of (3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc) along the two sides of triangle and centre
start with the pattern at the right hand side edge of the top side of kerchiefcontinue pattern till the end of the front of kerchief
and then we work the pattern along the front edge of the kerchief till end

Row 3 : sl-st till the 1st sc ; 3 dc in that same 1st sc ;
(sk next 3 dc, sc in the next ch-1 sp ;
sk next 3 dc, 3 dc in the next sc) ;
rep (to) till the centre ch-1 sp ;
[3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc] in the centre ch-1 sp ;
sk next 3 dc, sc in the next sp ;
rep (to) till the next corner ch-1 sp ;
[3 dc ; ch 1, 3 dc] in the centre ch-1 sp ;
rep (to) till end ; ch 1 and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
the centre pattern stitchand that's Row 3 complete
As we work the last row we will work on the straps or ties at the same time.
So first place a marker in the ch-1 sp of the two corners from where we will start the ties (just for convenience)
We will start on the pattern and work all the way till Marker 1 (which is at the right hand side of our kerchief on the top row) ; then work the tie for the kerchief and then complete the pattern on the top row and work the 2nd tie to finish our cute little head kerchief.

Last Row 4 : (3 dc + picot + 2 dc) all in the 1st sc ;
sk next dc, sc in the next dc ;
*sk next dc , (3 dc + picot + 2 dc) all in the next sc ;
sk next dc, sc in the next dc* ;
rep *to* till the centre ch-1 sp ;
(3 dc + picot + 2 dc) all in the same centre ch-1 sp ;
rep *to* till the first marked corner ;
3 dc in the marked corner and then we start on the 1st tie ;
Work 50 ch ;  Turn and work sc in each ch till the same dc you started from ; 2 more dc in the same sp ;
rep *to* till the next marked corner ;
Work 50 ch ;  Turn and work sc in each ch till the last dc.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Row 4 startRow 4 pattern detail
start with the last row border pattern

work 50 ch from the first marked cornerwork sc in each st all the way back
work 50 ch from the 1st marked corner and then work sc in each ch back

and continue working in pattern till the 2nd marker on the left hand side of kerchiefand work in pattern all the way till the next marked corner
and work in pattern all the way till the next marked corner

work 50 ch at the 2nd corner as welland work sc in each ch all the way back
work 50 ch at the 2nd marker and then work sc in each ch all the way back

and join with a sl-st to the 1st st to finish
and join with a sl-st to the 1st st to finish

and this is our lovely head kerchief all done and ready to go to the donation centre

Now  (while I have not done this), using the exact same pattern you can make a lovely triangular scarf too.  All you need to do is work as many rows as needed for the length and width of your scarf and then just to add to the length and laciness of the pattern, you can add a few tassels to the end.
