Doesn't this color combination remind you of some yummy chocolate, vanilla strawberry Cassata or Neapolitan ice cream.. mmmmm

This is a really simple pattern, using just double crochet stitches all through. The beauty of this pattern is that not only can you use any yarn to work it, you can make it to any size as well.

Materials used : Today I’ve used ~ 3 balls of Yarnspirations Caron Cotton Cakes yarn with a 5 mm crochet hook ; embroidery needle ; fabric glue to seal ends ; crochet stitch markers

For Indians : The yarn I’ve used is something like our Ganga Alisha acrylic yarn - or slightly thicker (say 1.5 times) to our Vardhaman / Oswal acrylic yarns or Laura knitting cotton .

You could use Anchor , Red rose , 4-ply knitting cotton , or unbranded knitting cotton or White Rose or bamboo knitting cotton , Milk cotton ; Silk yarns ; Baby soft acrylic yarn , Ganga Spectrum as well

General yarn info : The yarn used today is not specific to this pattern.

You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.

International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used in this thickness, I’d suggest Lily Sugar n' Cream cotton yarn, Caron Simply Soft , Bernat Softee chunky.

but I think you could also use Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn

Difficulty level : Intermediate

Size made : 58" x 28" with 7" long tassels

sc : single crochet hdc : Half Double crochet

ch : chain ch-sp : chain space

Please note that I start all my rounds with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.

Please note that I take a lot of trouble to give loads of tips through my pattern sheet, so please read through the full sheet before you pick up your hook n yarn.

The beauty of today's pattern is that you can use any yarn with a suitable hook to create this project. You can also use any stitch (sc or hdc or e-sc ; or any of the extended stitches - videos for all of which are given above). I've worked my scarf in dc, so that's how I'm writing out my pattern.

The other beauty is that there is no end size for this - you can make it to any size and then add tassels as long as you want to make it dainty and 'long'er..

There are also innumerable patterns for this creation available on the net as it really is one of the simplest scarf patterns to crochet. Mine is just a small variant of the regular pattern.

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Start Row 1: with a magic circle and work 3 dc in it. Pull lightly to close but do not join. Turn

Row 2 : 3 dc in the 1st dc ; (sk next dc, 3 dc in the last dc). Turn.

As I do not want too large a space (or make it too lacy) in my scarf, I do not add ch-1 sps between my two sets of 3-dc all through the project.

This means that you need to imagine a ch-1 sp between two sets of 3-dc OR remember that we will always work our next set of 3-dc in between the spaces we've just made in the earlier row

If all of this is too confusing, just add a ch-1 sp between two 3-dc sets.

Photos given below to explain what I mean.

Row 3 : 3 dc in the 1st dc ;

(sk next 2 dc, 3 dc in the next space before the next 3-dc set) ;

sk next 2 dc, 3 dc in the last dc. Turn.

Using a multi-colored yarn for this project just adds another level of fun

I started with a magic circle for a neat start

I started with a magic circle & then we're working in between the 3-dc sets in the imaginary ch-1 space

Row 4 : 3 dc in the 1st dc ;

(sk next 2 dc, 3 dc in the next space before the next 3-dc set) ;

rep (to) till the last 3 dc ;

sk next 2 dc, 3 dc in the last dc. Turn.

Using a variegated yarn just adds to the fun with this pattern

I'm sure you've got the pattern by now. You will be working the (to) as many times as needed through the row and starting and ending with 3 dc in the 1st and last sts. Cool eh? Of course if you are using a multi-colored / self striping yarn, this gives it a stunning look.

Rep Row 4 till you have the size you need for your scarf.

I'd suggest that the top row needs to be long enough to go around your neck (assuming you're draping this over your shoulders) or a bit longer if you want the triangle around the front and the two ends going around your neck and then coming back to the front.

Finishing ideas :

You can end in pattern (as I have) or you can work a row of sc along the edge.

You can also decide to work a row of sc all along the "V" edge of the scarf too.

You can work a row of reverse single crochet or Crab stitch along the edges as well (video below).

I have added tassels along the "V" edges and left the top without a sc finish
