Come along and let’s create something
beautiful with a simple granny square today.
This yarn is not specific for this project.
You can use any yarn with a suitable hook to make this project to any size.
In general : The lighter
the yarn, the better the end product if being used for a belly dance belt. You can use this pattern to make a blanket as
well, in which case you just use blanket suitable yarn and hook.
International yarns : Among the international yarns I have used, I’d suggest Aunt Lydia Cotton 10, Aunt Lydia Bamboo-Viscose 10, DMC Petra, Sullivans knitting cotton (Australia), Milford Soft, Hilaza Rustica Eclat , Alize cotton yarn and Alize bamboo yarn.
Skill level : Intermediate
to advanced.
Stitches used :
Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);
[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice. One dc made.
Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.
Abbreviations used : (Using U.S terminology)
lp(s) : Loop(s) sc : Single crochet
dc : Double crochet sp : Space
sl-st : Slip stitch st(s) : Stitch(es)
hk : Hook
yo : Yarn Over ch : Chain
fsc : Foundation Single Crochet
dc 3-tog : Double crochet 3-together
Instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
For our boho /
belly dance belt, we will first make several granny squares / motifs and then
attach them. Add in beads and bling as
desired when making the square, by the way.
I will not be
telling you where to add the beads or when to change colours – that’s your
creativity.
I request you
to check the links at the top of this blog on how to add beads onto your yarn
and work.
Once we make
our motifs and attach them, we will work on the top of belt and bottom bling.
Oh, you can use this motif pattern to make a baby blanket too.. just make as many as you need for the length and width of your blanket and then join away.
So let’s start with the basic square pattern
first. Please note I have tweaked the
pattern just a bit to suit my requirements.
If you are able to follow the chart, do go ahead.
Start : with a magic
circle and 12 sc in that magic circle.
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.
Right from Round 1, we will use a dc 3-tog.
Triple Crochet : trc : wrap yarn twice around hook, insert hk into st ; yo (4 lps on hk); [yo, draw through 2 lps] three times. One trc made.
Chainless start for Triple / Treble Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of trc.
dc 3-tog : Double crochet 3-tog : [yo, insert hk in st or ch-sp, yo and pull up a lp ; yo and draw through 2 lps] 3 times (4 lps on hk) ; yo, draw through all lps on hk. One dc 3-tog made.
Round 1 : dc 3-tog in
the 1st sc ;
ch 2, trc in the next sc; ch 2, dc 3-tog in the
next sc ;
*ch 5, dc 3-tog in the next sc ; ch 2, trc in the
next sc ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next sc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1st
st.
Round 2 : sl-st into
the 1st ch-2 sp , dc 3-tog in the same 1st ch-2 sp ;
ch 2, trc in the next trc ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp ;
*ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ;
ch 5, dc 3-tog
in the next ch-2 sp ;
ch 2, trc in the next trc ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1st
st.
Round 3 : sl-st into
the 1st ch-2 sp , dc 3-tog in the same 1st ch-2 sp
;
ch 2, trc in the next trc ; ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp ;
*(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) once
;
ch 5, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp ;
ch 2, trc in the next trc ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1st
st.
Round 4 : sl-st into
the 1st ch-2 sp , dc 3-tog in the same 1st ch-2 sp
;
ch 2, trc in the next trc ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp ;
*ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ;
(ch 1, dc
3-tog in the next ch-5 sp ;
[ch 1, dc 3-tog in the same ch-5 sp] ;
rep [to] once) ;
ch 1, sc in the next ch-5 sp ;
ch 5, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp ;
ch 2, trc in the next trc ;
ch 2, dc 3-tog in the next ch-2 sp* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1st
st.
In our following round, we will work ch-5 picots
all around.
Our ch-5 picot is (ch 5,
sl-st into the 5th ch from hk)
Our 4 trc’s form the four corners for our granny
square in this last round.
Round 5 : sl-st past
the 1st ch-2 sp and onto the 1st trc ,
sc + picot in the same 1st trc
;
*ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp ;
ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in the next ch-1 sp ;
ch 2 + picot + ch 2 and then sc in the next ch-1
sp ;
ch 5, sk next ch-1 sp, sc + picot in the next
trc* ;
rep *to* all around ;
ch 5 and join with a sl-st to the 1st
st.
This completes one granny square. Now go ahead and make as many as you wish for
the waist / hip of the person you’re making this belt for .. or the blanket you are designing :)
There are several ways to join motifs, but the
join-as-you-go is one of the neatest ones, especially with a lacy end round
like we have here.
In our case, as we have these ch-5 sps all
around, what I did is
a)
On the last round of the Motif 2,
work ch 2, and then sc into the Motif 1 (or the earlier motif) ; ch 2 and then
work the stitch per pattern in the Motif 2 (which you are working on
completing).
b)
When you come to the picots, you
will work as before – i.e ch 2, sl-st into the picot of Motif 1, ch 2, and
complete the picot by sl-st into the st of Motif 2.
You are linking 2 picots together – got it?
Right then.. let’s go off and make our row of
granny squares and we’ll meet back shortly
As you can see, I’ve decided to have two rows of
granny square motifs to make my belt – so go ahead and create your basic belt
first.
At any time, you can decide to add in
beads. Here are the links again
Once I’d finished with the granny square
attachment, I decided to work a small top strap.
Top Strap idea :
Once again, feel free to add beads as you go along.
I added my beads in the centre of each ch-sp.
OK, so I re-attached my yarn to one end of the
belt in the corner ch-sp ;
sc in that same corner ch-sp ;
(ch 5, sc in the next ch-sp) ;
rep (to) all the way to the end. Turn.
In the following row, I basically worked ch-5
sps, but in the centre of the earlier ch-5 sp.
So to start the next row, hdc in the 1st
sc ;
ch 3 and sc in the 1st ch-5 sp ;
(ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) all the way to the end. Turn.
If you want to work one more lacy trellis row,
then work a sc in the 1st hdc, ch-5 and, sc in the 1st
ch-5 sp ; (ch 5, sc in the next ch-5 sp) ;
rep (to) all the way to the end. Turn.
In the last row, I worked just hdc all through –
I basically worked 3 hdc in each ch-5 sp, ensuring that I had a flat row. If it puckers, reduce or increase the number
of stitches, to get it even and flat.
None of this is important to the pattern – as its just to keep the belt
flat and give it a neat row to attach onto the black backing – so don’t worry
too much about it.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Lower tassels and coin + beads add
idea :
For the bottom of the belt, I basically did the
same thing as for the top – reattaching the yarn at one corner and then
creating the ch-5 sp trellis lacy effect. Once again I added my beads in the centre of
the ch-5 sp.
Once I had a nice lacy trellis formed, I added
long chains with beads and the belly belt coins that hung as tassels off the
last row.
For the coin, rather than tediously string them
in, I worked them as I went along – just pushing them through my hook and then
crocheting them in as I went along.
Worked pretty well for me. If
they do not go through your hook, then you will need to string them onto your
yarn first.
Fasten off and weave in ends.
For the final finish and clean up, I attached my
whole belt neatly onto a black backing to show it off in all its glory.
And that’s it.. your oh! Yet another shiny,
tinkly and shimmery boho / belly dance belt is ready to be used…. Do remember
to credit me when you ready to show off this lovely creation too.
