OVAL SHELLED BELT

I have had a really hard time trying to get a proper set of belts that just match the outfit.. and now thanks to the internet and the zillion-a-minute (ok.. so that’s a small exaggeration ) uploads, we can really quickly make up a matching belt for all our creations.

Thank you for joining me.

In case you have just joined me, know that you can access all of my earlier creations by checking under ‘categories’ on the right hand side of this blog under “Labels”.  Then, for your convenience, follow me here or on Facebook, You Tube, Pinterest, Twitter or Instagram.

I am also going to ‘try’ and be smart and get this belt buckle that I can clip onto the end of my belt.. which means that I can have this inter-changeable buckle for many of my belts.  Not sure how the person who receives this likes this idea.. but hey, one’s gotta try, right !

This is my take on the belt after being inspired by one of those wonderful free floating freebies over the net.  I am, as usual, writing down my notes, and am sharing them with you.

Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body (or belt in today's project) measurement.  This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

Today I’ve used our lovely Indian Red Rose knitting cotton (Art V-433 ; No 16).
This pattern will work well with a lace weight to 2  / 3 or 4 ply yarn .. and it will also work with the polyester purse yarns we get in India.

Quick analysis of what we’re going to do here today.  We’re going to make a long foundation chain that equals the length of belt you want.  So measure your round waist (of that of the person for whom this belt is intended), then add as much as you think you need for an overlap and this is the length of chain that you will start with. There are two overlaps you need to think about – one that goes around the buckle part – in and around the centre part of the buckle, and the second overlap is the little bit that comes after you take your belt all around your waist and through the little loop on your belt.

So say you want a belt for a 30” around waist, I’d make a chain length of about 35-36”.

I’d also like to add that while I have written out the pattern as per the chart by designer, I’ve not used the whole pattern for my project.  When I felt it was sufficiently wide, I stopped , fastened off and wove in ends.  My project ends after Round 4.

Now once you have the length you need for one side – count your chain – and we’re going to work back on this same chain to the start again. So assuming you have 100 ch for length of waist, you put a marker at this point, and then turn around we’ll be working a 100 ch again. OK, but every few ch, we will join it to our first chain.. so we will get 2 chains of 100 each, joined every 5th ch.

Technical confusion :  As we’re working from one end to another that ‘qualifies’ as a row, and then we turn around and come back, that becomes a ‘round’.. but as instructions go ‘till one end’ and then turn around, I’m just going to call it all “Rows”.  Technicality aside, let’s just get the pattern going

The pattern is in repeats of 15+ 11.

.… and off we go

In case the video does not come on, visit https://youtu.be/XAv2gZoGB_8

Start Row 1 : with chains in multiples of 15 + 11 for the length you want for your belt ;
ch 10, sk next 9 ch ,  sc in next ch ;
*ch 5, sk next 4 ch, sc in next ch* ;
rep *to* all the way till end.

Join with a sl-st to the 1st ch.

Now we’re going to be working in a round of sorts – so you start at one end, go all the way down and at the end of one side of the belt, you’ll go around and work on the sts on the other side of the belt.  Eventually the first row of chains you’ve made will become lovely open holes.  So instructions here will read ‘start’ then blah blah.. till one side of belt, and then I’ll continue instructions which are meant for the other side of belt.. clear, I trust

Row 2 :  9 dc into the 1st ch-5 sp ;
*sc in next ch 5 sp ; ch 5, sc in next ch-5 sp ;
9 dc in next ch-5 sp*;
rep *to* till the last ch-5 sp on one side of your belt ;
ch 5 , 9 dc in same last ch-5 sp ;
Turn and work into the other side of the belt ;
rep *to* till the last (or 1st) ch-5 sp;
9 dc in 1st ch-5 sp ;
ch 5 ,  and join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Row 3 :  dc into the 1st dc ; (ch 1, dc in next dc) ;
rep (to) 7 times ; sc in next ch-5 sp ;
*dc in next dc ;
rep (to) 8 times ;
sc in next ch-5 sp* ;
rep *to* till end of one side of your belt ;
<< [dc in the next dc ;
rep (to) 8 times in ch-5 sp at the end of belt] ;
{ch 1, dc in the next ch-5 sp} ;
rep {to} 4 times ;
rep (to) 9 times ;
sc in the next ch-5 sp >> ;
 rep *to* all the way till the last ch-5 sp ;
rep {to} 5 times ;
ch 1, join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Note :  With my project I have ended with Row 4.
So at the end of the row, I worked ch 3 and joined with a sl-st to the 1st st.
I then fastened off and wove my yarn in.

After I’d finished, I thought it would be a fun idea to add in a picot – and I have added that idea in when working my video.

Row 4 :  (ch 3 , sk next ch-1 sp , sc in next dc) ;
rep (to) all around .
In your last ch 3, work ch 1, and then hdc into 1st st.

In case you want to continue on with the pattern, then you will end with the ch 1 hdc to get to the middle of the last sp.
Now you’ll be in the middle of this ch-3 sp and you start right here.

Row 5 : (ch 7 , sc in the next ch-3 sp ;
7 dc in next ch-3 sp ; sc in next ch-3 sp) ;
rep (to) all around .
Join with a sl-st to the 1st st.

Fasten off.  Weave in ends.

Add in a regular belt buckle (like the designer has)

Sweet Nothings Crochet free pattern blog ; free crochet floral button pattern ; photo of the floral button ;
or the button that I've made (link below)

Using a button :
Attach your button firmly over the last ‘hole’ of your belt.
All you need to ensure is that the button size is just right to go through the hole, and that on wearing, it does not slip through.

Here's a cool video on how to use a regular smooth stone and make that into a button

And in case you want to make your button floral (like I have) then here’s the blog link http://www.craftandfun.com/2014/09/riciclo-creativo-bottoni-idee-decorazioni-uncinetto.html#more/.
This is not in English either, but the designer has such beautiful self explanatory photographs.. the written word ain’t important. Enjoy.

Enjoyed this ?? I sure did.. Come back right here for more freebie patterns
