HOUNDSTOOTH SWEATER TOP SET

The awesomely cut4e Houndstooth Sweater Top Set : A free crochet pattern from Sweet Nothings Crochet

HOUNDSTOOTH SWEATER TOP SET
I have a houndstooth combo before - of a pair of fingerless gloves with a matching scarf / cowl - and were I to make this in full size, I think I'd have a great set

In today's pattern blog, you'll get one main pattern that I have made in three different ways.  It's fantastic how one pattern can be interpreted and used in so many ways to give such different end results !
Remember to go all the way to the end of this blog

Instructions : (Using U.S terminology)
Please note that I start all my rows with a ch 1, turning chain for ease.
Please check the top of this blog for easy video tutorials on all stitches used in today's pattern.
Please read through all my notes before you pick up your hook, so you know just where we're heading in our pattern.
In my patterns I work with the principle of stitch count and body measurement.
This means that you need to work the stitch count in pattern, till you get the measurement (length and/or width) that you need for your project.

I start all my rounds / rows with a ch 1 turning chain for ease.
Do check the top of this blog for video tutorials of all the stitches used in today’s pattern.

I have used an 4-ply yarn with a 3.5mm crochet hook.

As mentioned before, I have made a houndstooth scarf.  Find that at https://www.ravelry.com/projects/shyamanivas/holding-hands-scarf

I also said I have worked the same pattern in three different ways to get three different end results, so here goes.

Red 'n' white sweater :
So what did I differently?
Not very much.
I like my foundation single crochet start, so I  used that to start.
I worked 4 fsc to start the neck portion of my to and then worked sc-blo for the band look

Single crochet back loop only (sc-blo) : https://youtu.be/TaQI3Vu9VRQ

Double Crochet : dc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (3 lps on hk);

[yo, draw through 2 lps] twice.  One dc made.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/xdnjB27zpYo

Chainless start for Double Crochet : I dislike the ch-2 / ch – 3 start, and this is what I do to start my row of dc.

Check out the video at https://youtu.be/wskv3iTjRx0

Single Crochet : Sc : yo, insert hk into st ; yo (2 lps on hk); yo, draw through both lps.  One sc made.  Check out the video at https://youtu.be/ghACqBpA-3k

First stitch for Single Crochet : This is how I like to start my row of sc. Check out the video at https://youtu.be/6pVYRfsf4_M

Go ahead and create something cute.

Grey sweater :
For this jacket sweater I used just under 200 gms of Vardhman Cotton Dreamz knitting cotton with a 4.5 & 5 mm crochet hook
#2 Grey sweater : Variant of Houndstooth Sweater Top Set
For this I made just the same changes as above for stitches BUT I also worked from centre front , around and under armhole to back, and back to the front in rows.  So I kept the pattern given (which has us turning at the end of rows anyway) but I also got an open front.

When I was done, I worked a few rows of hdc up and down the front to get a placket.
One side side of your placket is all hdc ; on the other side you need to make button holes.

Buttonhole :
For this work hdc ; ch 1, sk 1 st, hdc in the 5 (or 6) next sts.
Work this evenly to the end.
I suggest you count the sts end to end and divide evenly.
In the following row (after skipping sts) you will work 1 hdc in each st and 1 hdc in each ch-sp all hew ay end to end.

Collar button :
I just decided to add a small button along the neckline / collar - and worked an additional few hdc rows just on the neckline , sufficient to hold one button.  As before work the button hold idea where you want the button to fit in. Obviously, the button is on the neck section and the hold is on the extension you work.

The #2 variant : Grey front open sweater
I matched the pattern for the sleeves and bottom edge - and totally loved my open front jacket.

Baby blue sweater and cap
The #3 variant : Blue sweater with matching beanie
For the final creation, I used unbranded 4-ply  acrylic with a 4mm crochet hook

For the yoke section, I worked the moss pattern as given, and then changed to all hdc for the body portion.
I also thought a short sleeve would be cute

For the armhole/sleeve ending and base I worked the hdss (half double crochet slip stitch) pattern

And this is one enchanting sweater top all ready to go.

For the matching cap I worked a simple pattern :
Starting with 10 hdc and increasing till I had 50 hdc (which was about 5" : and that is about the diameter you need for a 16-17" circumference cap)
At this point I worked all hdc till I had 6"
For the final 1.5" I worked fphdc & bphdc alternatively in each st all around to get a ribbed rim finish.

Front post half double crochet : fphdc :  Post stitches are stitches worked around the post of a stitch of the row below. Here is an easy video tutorial for the fphdc at https://youtu.be/R_dVr9FnBkk
